When I launched Queen Bee Wraps, I imagined people using our food-grade beeswax for beautiful, sustainable food wraps. What I didn’t expect? Someone buying our wax... to bake French cakes.

That’s when a customer messaged me after placing an order and said, “I’m making canelés.”
I had to stop and Google it. And wow — what a discovery.

What Is a Canelé?

Canelés (pronounced can-uh-lays) are small, rich French pastries from Bordeaux, known for their crisp, caramelised shell and soft, custardy centre. They’re traditionally baked in copper molds — but here’s the twist: to get that iconic crust, bakers coat the molds in food-grade beeswax.

Yes — beeswax! Not just for wraps, but for baking.

The beeswax prevents sticking, adds a subtle honeyed aroma, and gives canelés their beautiful shine and snap.

Beeswax and Baking: A Delicious Combo

Most bakers use a 50/50 blend of beeswax and butter to coat the inside of the molds before pouring in the batter. As the cakes bake, the wax melts and works its magic — leaving behind that golden, glossy crust.

And now? Beeswax-baked canelés are catching on here in the UK.
